The Grinch movie review

You may be wondering, what does some cranky, fuzzy, green monster have to do with college students? Well, I’m here to tell you. The Grinch has been around for many years, with cartoons, books, movies and movie remakes. However, the movie Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas released in 2000 is a fan favorite. Jim Carry starring as the Grinch brings many laughs to the screen and brings light to tricky situations. From the beginning of the movie we learn that the people of “Whoville” are rather frightened by the Grinch. The people of Whoville love Christmas while the Grinch does not. He tries to make Christmas miserable for the people of Who-Ville. However, one girl in particular, Cindy Lou-Who, played by Taylor Momsen, made it her mission to make the Grinch like Christmas.

Like some college students, The Grinch can be seen uninvited from many events the people of Who-Ville has. He doesn’t participate in many of their celebrations at all. He in fact ruins them on purpose to make people hate Christmas just like him. When moving to college most college students don’t have many friends, leading to having to make some. A lot of students are lonely and not invited places their first few months of college because they don’t have their established group of friends. Them, like the Grinch can be seen not included in many events.

It started young for the Grinch. He was bullied at a very young age in grade school around Christmas. This is what ultimately made the Grinch hate Christmas and not want to make friends. After this said incident at school, he told everyone he hated Christmas. He then climbed a mountain that would be his future home, this mountain overlooked Whoville. After this happened, he was never invited to their Christmas events, and he was isolated alone at the top of his mountain.

On her mission Cindy Lou-Who interviewed many people in Whoville including her parents, The Mayor and Martha May. The Grinch was in love with Martha May in grade school. We later find out that in grade school the mayor was actually in love with Martha May and that’s why he bullied the Grinch.  College students may relate to this because one of their friends may have invited them to something where they would feel more welcome. They could also relate if they’ve had the same interest in someone, so it starts an argument or issues between friendships. Cindy Lou-Who found next to nothing in her interviews. She decided to interview the Grinch himself.

She went up to his mountain to interview her and he wanted nothing to do with her. Cindy Lou-Who respected his wishes and left his house. She left an invitation for their Christmas Celebration. The Grinch found it, he looked at the date and threw it away. The Grinch considered going and decided not to. But he did, however, decide to go in a way to still ruin Christmas for the people of Whoville. The Grinch decided he would dress up as Santa and steal presents instead of giving them. He excicuted the plan and started taking presents from the houses until Cindy Lou-Who caught him in the middle of the night. She told “Stanta” not to forget about the Grinch, even though he was not on the nice list. This can show that even if you think no one is routing for you, someone always is. This can be especially true for college students in the sense that your parents are not going to be with you throughout your college experience but knowing that they are supporting you from afar is important.

The Grinch may just be a fun seasonal movie for some, but there is a lot you can learn. You can learn the depths of friendship, being included, and many more. This movie is good at providing life lessons, especially for college students. Unlike the Grinch, it is especially important to have a strong support system at college. This is important because most of the time your parents can only support you from afar. So, having good friends and finding people that care about you and for you is important to find in college. It can be scary finding new friends, especially because you feel like you are in kindergarten again and have to start all over, but once you find that group or those few friends, college will be the time of your life.
